Honor Roll Assembly

The middle school honor roll assembly means one thing. It’s summer time! Keagan has had such a great year! His science and language teachers have been so wonderful this year. He was selected to lead tours around the middle school last week for rising sixth graders. He served as a peer mentor to a special needs sixth grader, and he made the honor roll all four quarters! To celebrate, we had lunch and shakes at Chick-Fil-A.

I now have two high schoolers, and it just seems so impossible to me. Keagan has said repeatedly, “I’m in high school, Mom. Can you believe it?”

No I cannot. This seems like yesterday.

Time, please slow down. I never imagined that it could possible go so fast.

Eighth Grade Dance

Eighth grade dance. Keagan decided to go with a group of guys instead of a date. Then I found this on IG. I don’t know this girl, but Keagan looks so happy. He’s just beaming! I see his smile and I see my sister.

Gosh! Look at that smile! He’s so handsome!

The teachers worked so hard to make the cafeteria look like something other than a cafeteria. It’s gorgeous!

Keagan had a very specific ensemble in mind when we went shopping last weekend, but then we couldn’t find the pants he wanted in his size. The idea was scratched and we built a new outfit. He looks so good in it and he knows it!

Keagan and his two best friends, Ty and Landon.

In two weeks both of my boys will be in highschool. Two weeks! We are busy beyond belief. I’m exhausted most days. I dream of my bed and no alarm clocks. I wonder some days how it all gets done. But I know it will soon be over. And then I realize these are the very best days. It simply can’t get better than this.

Game One: Middle School Soccer

You know it’s time for spring soccer when the cherry trees at the park look like this. Every year I see them, and every year I gawk at the brilliance. Every year I take a picture and regret I am unable to capture the true beauty.

We won game one of the middle school soccer season with a score of 6-0. I’m not sure how it is possible, but Keagan scored a goal while playing CDM. Our team looked like professionals next to the opposing team.

Game two is Wednesday, and I’m expecting similar results. It’s a great year to be a Hawk!

High School Orientation

This happened tonight.

Don’t blink because time is a thief.

I feel like this was just yesterday, and here we are selecting courses for the first year of highschool.

Girl Crush

Keagan is never short of a school story. His funny stories usually involve a teacher (more like poking fun at a teacher), but this time the main character is Shirley. Shirley likes Keagan. They are not on the same team, but their paths cross. When he walks in the halls in between classes, she yells, “Keagan is so hot!” She texts him several times a day to tell him random parts of her day or to ask what he’s doing. She does not know soft spoken and she is unfamiliar playing hard-to-get. They do have exploratory arts together and on the second day of school, Keagan was the last to arrive to class. All of the seats were taken, the room was crowded, and Keagan stopped in the doorway scanning the room looking for a seat. Shirley exclaims in front of all, “Move aside! Make room for the king. Keagan has finally arrived.” The aisles cleared and Keagan made his way to the far corner of the room while shaking his head.

Kaylee also has a crush on Keagan and has since they were in third grade together five years ago. She is a special needs girl and goes to church with us. She writes notes to him, passes them to him in the hallway, and just recently got a Snapchat account so she sends messages, too. She was so excited last week to tell him she was going to Atlanta to watch a Braves game. She told Keagan it was a long drive - a very long drive - and she wanted to know if she could text him while she was in the car so to make the time go by faster. Keagan, the boy with unrivaled compassion for others, agreed.

The girl he really likes, the girl he dated most of last year, has moved on to highschool. She won’t dare date a middle schooler (and shouldn’t), but as soon as May rolls around, you better believe Keagan will make his move.

Meanwhile I told him to keep the Shirley stories coming; it will make the time go by faster.

Vegan Yeese

Today Keagan had an appointment to renew his military ID. He’s been nervous about this rather meaningless errand, and today we learned it was because he didn’t know how to sign his name in cursive. While awaiting his number to be called, he practiced.

It looks like he has renamed himself Vegan Yeese. 🤣

Middle School Soccer Playoffs

Our first playoff game of the middle school season was rained out, and we were given a new date that just so happened to be the date of the travel teams’ state league games. With two of our key players at state league, our “easy” win resulted in two OTs, PKs, and then a big fat L! The year we were to win it all has almost ended in heart ache! Our loss meant we fell into the losers bracket. We won our first game in the You-won’t-get-first-anyway playoff game.

Wednesday night we played a quarter-final game - clearly hoping our losing season will get us on track for a third place finish.

Look at this guy! He didn’t see the reason to play for third; I did my best to convince him otherwise. It’s tough being the parent of super competitive boys who believe winning is all.

He saw things differently when he scored the first goal of the game. When Tristan said he had scores a trash goal, Keagan said, “Who cares? A goal is a goal.”

He has played CDM as a holding mid on the far right side of the field almost the entire season. Jandro yelled tonight, “Keagan, for once this season play in the center of the field.” He did and then set up the second goal of the game.

Monday we head back to the fields for a semi-final game. Go Hawks!

Student of the Week

This kiddo was awarded student of the week. His math teacher, his dear math teacher Ms. Robards, awarded him for hard work and perseverance because math is not Keagan’s forte. Yet, he earned an A quarter three in advanced math! This kid does not completely grasp his potential - yet. I’m hoping today will open his eyes and help him realize the world is his.

My other son received no such award. He is being recognized in the principal’s office for skipping class. Who needs to attend every class every day, says Evan?
I do.

He’s mopping floors and vacuuming today. And his phone is turned off and hidden in my underwear drawer. He will never rummage through that drawer so I consider it safe!

Athletic and Academic

Keagan: Mom, I have something to show you. I got a letter today and it is in a school envelope. This can only mean one thing. This is serious. The teacher told me I couldn't read the letter; it was only to be read by you at home. I couldn't do that, so I hid the letter in my backpack, quietly opened it, and stuck the actual letter in my pocket. Then I asked to go to the bathroom to read it.

Me: Well, what did it say?

Keagan: I will need to read it aloud to you. Are you ready?

Congrats, Keagan. I am so proud of you!

Middle School Orientation

Watch out RMS! Next year you get both of the Toole boys amongst your hallways.  Thanks to today's orientation, Keagan had his two burning middle school questions answered.

1. What's for lunch?

2. Do we have to walk class-to-class in a straight line?

He was pleased with both answers.

I might have two middle schoolers now,  but we have a full summer of fun ahead of us! We will forget about school for another seven weeks!

I Now Have Two Middle-Schoolers

Keagan and Mrs. Spence

I might have been a little sad at Keagan's elementary school promotion ceremony today except that it was so blazing hot in the school gym it was all I could do to keep from passing out. I stayed focused long enough to hear his name announced, not once but twice! He was voted by his peers and teachers as the top class citizen. I'm so super proud that other students and teachers deem him role-model worthy.

After the ceremony, we took pictures with the classmates and the girlfriend. How cute is she?

This afternoon we celebrate another successful school year with ice cream! I think I might celebrate with a strong drink instead; I just realized that I now have two middle-schoolers! God be with me!

Art Fair

Another last...this time it was our last Art Fair. Keagan proudly stood next to his art and allowed me to snap a picture or two. However, Thursday nights are basketball nights, and in his mind, sports rank well above the arts. We compromised, and I agreed to let him skip the recorder concert if we could at least walk the halls to view the art on display.
On a positive note, we have said good-bye to weekly spelling lists and nightly reading logs. The evenings are ours again! The countdown to summer vacation has officially begun!

Building Character One Experience at a Time

Today was the third quarter's academic honors assembly at the elementary school. Of all of the days/week/times, I am so glad that I was able to attend this one. Keagan was awarded honor roll and the coveted Haller's Heroes for citizenship and showing good character. This makes three years in a row.

For the past two weeks I was worried to death that his teacher was holding a grudge against him after he told her the correct way to pronounce Versailles and fascism, in front of the entire class. I guess she forgave him, though, because she was thrilled that I was there to see him win the prize.

Just as I was forming the words to chew him out and debating the consequences for not meeting his quarterly reading goal, his name was announced for the citizenship award. I quickly forgot the reading award and made a mental note that good character means so much more than reading points. I decided to forgive him.

Heart with a Capital H

Keagan has a heart of gold. He's empathetic and loves to help people (or animals) in need.

Today at lunch I checked my voicemail to find this message:
"Mrs. Toole, this is Mrs. C from RES. I'm calling to tell you how impressed I am with Keagan. Today I observed a class and saw him encouraging a special needs child. He was so thoughtful and willing to go out of his way to make him feel included. Thank you for raising such an awesome kid!"

Since I've only heard from a principal one other time and that was when Evan broke a cafeteria spoon, I was shocked to hear such a positive message. But this is why my kids attend public school. This is what life is all about- learning to live with different people and modeling for others acceptance and empathy. This is Keagan's mission field, even if it is only a hockey game in the school gym. I'm so proud of him. Grades, athletic skill, test scores all pale in comparison. Nothing can be more important than having a  heart and a willingness to make a positive impact on the lives of others.

Land of the Free and the Brave

The annual Veterans Day program at the elementary school was held tonight. Keagan had a speaking part and narrated an introduction to the song "Blessed Peace." He nailed his lines.

When the invitation came home two weeks ago, Keagan tried his best to hide it. He didn't want to have anything to do with the program. Then a week prior to the performance the music teacher told him he had a nice singing voice, and she had a few lines for him to speak. At that point, I think he might have been happy to participate, but the teacher had a song that required them to perform a handkerchief routine. He was not happy about that.

He was one relieved boy at the end of the program - no more lines to worry with and no more jokes from his big brother about performing routines with colored streamers.

As for me, I saw it as another last. The last elementary school program.

The First of Many Lasts

It's Keagan's last year of elementary school and the beginning of an entire year of lasts for our family. Today was the quarter one awards assembly.

Keagan was awarded honor roll and the PE award. My kid is fast and smart!

I'd be sad about both of my boys being in middle school next year except I can't help thinking how liberating it will be next year to not have a spelling list to study every night! On the flip side, please let this year slow down! I can't imagine having two boys in middle school!

Fun Run

Today was the school's fun run, a new fundraiser organized by the PTO. I was at work and not able to cheer Keagan on in person, but one of my friends took a few pictures and said Keagan was running so fast, she couldn't get a picture of his face. He was beet red and drenched in sweat after finishing 42 laps. I bet those PTO moms were really upset when they realized the kid with the most laps didn't have one pledge!

Play Me a Song

I take back everything I have ever said about my boys and their lack of musical talent. Keagan came home today with the Music Award for his performance on the recorder and with his ability to read music. He also received an Accelerated Reader award and all A's Honor Roll. Word to the Wise: Be prepared to hear a rendition of Hot Cross Buns should you mention the recorder to him. He is prepared to perform at the drop of a hat.

We are celebrating tomorrow with an order of chicken fries and ice cream. Ice cream is our traditional last day of school treat, but this year, Keagan has asked that we also add chicken fries. Who could possible say no to that?

Artistic My Children Are Not

I was so looking forward to tonight's Art Fair. Last year, the walls in the elementary school were covered in wonderful, beautiful art. This year, not so much. The highlight was Keagan's orange ice cream art. I'm still not quite sure that I understand the premise behind it, but Keagan was super proud that each of the scoops of ice cream actually resembled the real thing.

Then there was this. The black and white water color piece. His teacher said he thought Keagan was going for a snowy landscape scene, with palm trees. Bless his heart, it got worse. The piece hanging above was supposed to be folded 3-D art. Keagan ended up slapping his center 3-D piece on the edge of the paper because he couldn't get the folds right. I was hooting with laughter; Keagan said, "This is how it goes every year. We go to the art fair. Mom laughs at my work. I get embarrassed."

Keagan's teacher must have felt badly for him because he came to me and said, "Well, who cares about art work when you can do math as well as you do and read above grade level?" I think the boys found a kindred spirit with that statement.

STEM Expo

Keagan was chosen to represent his class in this year's STEM Expo. His team designed a ramp that would reduce friction and increase the speed of a race car. He and the rest of the group have spent their lunch period this week preparing for tonight's interview and evaluation. It must have helped because the first two judges complimented the team on their use of academic language. Tomorrow morning the winning teams will be announced.
