Sports Banquet

Better late than never, I guess. We celebrated the end of the basketball season three months after it ended with dinner and medals. I assure you it was better received in April than it would have been in January. I didn’t feel much like celebrating after winning only two games. Tonight each player was recognized with a personalized medal.

The seventh graders will be leading the team next winter. Someone in the audience mumbled to his table, “Well I hope they grow.” Clearly he didn’t mean for the parents of the “short” kids to hear him. You better believe I didn’t let it pass. I immediately responded, “You do not have to be tall to play basketball.”

Keagan says next season will be his last season to play basketball. He plans to concentrate on playing soccer in highschool. Just like his brother. My heart hurts to hear this, but my life will be so much easier with only one sport schedule to manage.

Headed to the Playoffs

Keagan's sixth grade basketball team ended their regular season games today. The team is comprised of only sixth graders, but they play in a middle school division that includes eighth graders. We had a rough start and I was hoping to maybe win one game, two if we were lucky, but the boys surprised me and turned things around in December. After today's win, we qualified for the playoffs.

Round one of the playoffs is next weekend. Best of luck, Hawks!

Mr. K is Ready to Ball

This is a tall-tale, certainly the truth has been stretched, but this is Keagan's version of today's events.

"Hey, Keagan! You want to play a game of 4 on 1?"

"Sure. Let's ball."

Then Keagan proceeded to take on four really BIG fifth graders with a pick-up game of basketball. In his very first possesion of the game he juked out big guy number one and the fifth grader fell on his backside; the second player was faked out and tripped over his own feet;  and the third guy fell for the fake pump just in time for Keagan to pull up and shoot. He shouted, "Splash!" and the crowd (of two) went wild.

Keagan won the game, he now refers to himself as Mr. K, and he's ready to produce street ball videos for YouTube. Watch out, World!
