Turks and Caicos Conch Farm

We needed a break from the sun, sand and surf, so we spent the morning at a Conch Farm. Until this week, I had no idea that an animal actually lives in the conch shell and that it makes for a great meal. After today's tour of the farm, we know more than anyone ever needs to know about the sea snail. However, we couldn't leave the island without a conch shell. We took the rental car down another gravel road to Pelican Bay where we were told we could find conch shells washed up on the beach.

Sure enough. There were two; this just so happens to be the number allowed through customs. After a thorough wash, we are hoping to find the shells to be animal free.

A Vacation from Vacation

Voted one of the best beaches in America, we decided to stop over in Hilton Head on our way home from Florida. Truth be told, we needed a vacation from our vacation. It truly has the best white sand (and no sand fleas!) and the warmest water with a constant breeze to keep you cool. I also give this island props for being so clean. However, I have never been to a beach that sounds a horn at the siting of sharks. Today this happened to us. For half an hour we watched the fins of the sharks bob up and down near the shoreline of the hotel. We witnessed helicopters and small boats all doing their best to keep them at bay. For this, I think Hilton Head should also be given the title of "Most Authentic." It was an experience that the boys will not forget - me either for that matter.

You Know You Are in Texas If...

10. You step off the plane on December 26 to a temperature of 78 degrees.
9. Those awaiting arriving planes at the baggage claim are wearing boots and a cowboy hat.
8. The majority of the automobiles along I-635 are extended cab trucks. Chevy is the most popular but a Ford works for others just as well.
7. Pecan pie, peach cobbler, fruit cake, and apple pie are all served for dessert one evening.
6. The signs advertising loan rates at the local bank are written in Spanish and the subscript letters underneath have an English translation.
5. The strangers you pass on the farm to market roads wave as you drive past.
4. You fall asleep to the howl of the coyotes on a big chase in the pasture.
3. You have the pleasure of eating authentic Mexican food in a restaurant on the bad side of town.
2. The "N word" is used by extended family.
1. You think everyone else talks with an accent.
